One theme which is shown in this movie is racism.
Racism is a way to hurt people because of their appearance, their religion and culture or their country of origin. People got hurt with words, with actions or with the behavior against them.
It is a theory which means that some people are naturally stronger or weaker than other people because of their biological or cultural appearance.
Racism is a try to put people into a kind of hierarchy.
In the movie 'Fruitvale station' all police officers are white people and they only catch black people. It is a racist behavior from the police.
They don’t ask other people what happened in the train. They just see some black people and decide that they are guilty. And they don’t give these black people a chance to defend themselves.
On the other side there is the black man Oscar Grant who doesn’t care about if a person is black or white, male or female. So he helps the white woman Katie in the supermarket to choose the right fish for her dinner with her husband.
On New Year’s Eve he helps a white couple. The woman is pregnant and needs to go to the toilet. But the store owner means that the store is already closed and that they should go somewhere else. So Oscar talks to the store owner and offers him his last money to let the pregnant woman use his toilet.
Another theme which is shown in this movie is civil courage.
Civil courage is to be brave and to help people in public even if there could be a disadvantage for yourself. Civil courage is mostly about human rights or democracy.
In the movie 'Fruitvale station' are many people who filmed what happened with their mobile phones. But nobody had the civil courage to stop it or to tell the police what really happened in the train. They all just watched what was going on there and what the police did to these black people.
Contrariwise there is Oscar who would give his last money so that a pregnant woman could use the toilet in a store that just closed.
